The Big Pom Fell Championships

Fell running – The BIG POM FELL HANDICAP

ENTER HERE Name (and team..if in a team) , age and gender as of 01/01/22 required for scoring.

What

A league champs based on how you do across 10 pre-determined Peak District fell races. You can do as many or as few of the races as you wish. The maximum scoring races will be 5. You get points for each race that you do and it'll be your best 5 scores that make up your end of year points.

Points

In summary a score is given for each race based on your time with an age, gender and race difficulty factor. Running really fast at Kinder is worth more points than running the same speed at Winster, because its harder to go full pelt across Kinder. Its very similar to Road WAVA but adjusted by the specific Fell race. If you’re competitive in your race category expect to be battling in the Champs.

Individual Champs

At the end of the year your score is your 5 best scoring races.

Team Champs

3 finishers are required in a race to get a team score (the biggest scoring 3 will be the team). The teams 5 biggest scores from across all the races will be the team score at the end of the year. If you're Youlgrave..your team is Youlgrave. Otherwise it'll be whichever team you entered on entry (you can change during the season but points go to which ever team you're linked to at time of race).

The scoring long explanation.

The Handicap is calculated by

1. Calculating the Road WAVA score for the course record over the race distance.

2. The score is then subtracted from 100 which gives the difficulty %.

3. Your time is then adjusted by the difficulty %

4. The WAVA is calculated from your adjusted time.

e.g.

The course record at Lathkill is 00:43:49 and the distance is 11.5km.

The road WAVA for 11.5km of a 29yr old male is 70.64

The difficulty of Lathkill is set at 29.36 (100 – 70.64)

You re aged 29

You run 00:44:00

Your adjusted time will be (T x D =H ) T-H=AT = 00:31:05

Your WAVA calculated off your adjusted time will be 99.59 (because you got oh so close to the course record)

If you were aged 30+ and female and ran that time you’d smash WAVA 100 as you’re old. This is the point of WAVA.

T = actual race time

D = difficulty %

H = Handicap time

AT = Adjusted Time

Assumptions / Caveats:

1. The course record WAVA score is set at 29 year old Male. This is the last age before you start to die and slow down.

2. Weather conditions greatly effect times. This can not be accounted for. e.g. the course record could have been set on a perfect 10c day in january. This would give a lower difficulty factor. I could take the average winning time from the last 10 years to blunt this. Im not going to.

3. The course record could be rubbish giving a false high difficulty factor. Run faster make it better.
